Our Story

Built in 1914, this building was the first hospital in the area. It was also the first building with a concrete foundation. Over the years it has been a school, a dormitory, and had many other uses. The idea for a maritime museum came from local fishermen beginning in the 1970's. A group of passionate volunteers worked hard with local and provincial funding bodies and transformed the building into as a museum. It opened for its first season in 2001, and you can now see how the building has gone through many transitions.

Xaad Kíl

The museum is situated on the territory of the Haida Nation near the Haida community of Gaw Tlagée Old Massett. The Council of the Haida Nation is the governing political entity for the Nation and focuses on settling title and rights issues, and ensuring the Haida relationship with the land continues in perpetuity. The northern dialect of the Haida language is Gaw Tlagée Xaad Kíl and language revitalization efforts are organized by the Xaad Kil Née

Community

A registered charity, the museum is managed by a small volunteer board of directors. The museum is currently available to host small gatherings such as meetings for a nominal fee. Board members take turns supervising these events. School and summer camp visits can also be arranged with knowledgeable docents or board members available.

HOURS

Open seasonally from the Saturday of the May long weekend to the Monday of the Labour day weekend in September.

Open hours are subject to change, but we try to be open noon to 4 p.m.

ADMISSIONS

Currently we are accepting admissions by donation. All Tour Groups must be booked in advance and are subject to a minimum charge of $100 or $5 per person, whichever is cheaper.

Memberships

$10 per year gets one adult free admission all season.

10 years of annual membership or one payment of $100 get one adult free admission for life.
