Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum first opened in May 2001. Spearheaded by David Phillips, a small group of dedicated volunteers made real a dream started in the 1970’s. David, Bob Wylie, Charlie Bellis and Sam Simpson wanted to gather up maritime history and open a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the stories of northern Haida Gwaii.
Built in 1914 to serve as the island’s first hospital, the building was the first with a concrete foundation on the islands. By 1948 though, it was turned over to the School District for a dollar when the Health Services decided to move closer to the town centre on Main Street.
To collect, preserve and showcase the artefacts, stories and processes of maritime industries, culture and resources, past and present.
