Permanent Collection

The museum has gratefully accepted thousands of bits of local history, mostly donated with some on-loan, from local families and various estates. These items recount the history of commercial fishing, boat-building, whaling, canneries and the establishment of the local settler communities. The museum is also home to the oldest European-made artefact in British Columbia dredged up near Langara Island in the 1980's.

Boatbuilding Families of Greater Masset

Often a presentation of exhibits changing from year to year, the Jessie Simpson Gallery will house a semi-permanent collection: Boat Building Families of Greater Masset. The museum received a grant in 2019 to explore and expand our knowledge of the interconnected history between Haida canoe building families through the transition to commercial boat-building with local settler boat-building families. The exhibit now includes model Haida canoes by hobbyist Noel Bellis and a beautiful example of the modern boat-building of a carvel by master builder John Bennett, son of master builder Sonny Bennett. This was a work in progress as the pandemic hit. To date it presents an expanded story of the boat building industries that were the backbone of the fishing industry on the north coast. A story that starts with a respectful review of the master canoe builders of Gaw, through the transition to successful commercial fishing boat building only to be crushed by bad-faith corporations that decimated the local Haida fleet to a resurgence in reviving the master boat builders skills. The History of Boat Building in Greater Masset, where traditional meets modern.
