Our Story

Built in 1914, this structure was the area's first hospital and the first to feature a concrete foundation. Over the decades, it has served many roles—including as a school, a dormitory, and more. The idea to transform it into a maritime museum originated with local fishermen in the 1970s. Thanks to the dedication of passionate volunteers and support from both local and provincial funding bodies, the building was eventually repurposed as a museum. It officially opened for its first season in 2001. Today, visitors can explore the museum and witness the many transformations this historic building has undergone.

Xaad Kíl

The museum is located on the territory of the Haida Nation, near the Haida community of Gaw Tlagée (Old Massett). The Council of the Haida Nation serves as the governing political body for the Haida people, focusing on governance, rights, and the enduring relationship between the Haida and their land. The northern dialect of the Haida language spoken in this region is known as Gaw Tlagée Xaad Kíl. Efforts to revitalize the language are led by the Xaad Kil Née, a dedicated group working to preserve and promote Haida linguistic heritage.

Community

The museum operates as a registered charity and is overseen by a dedicated volunteer board of directors. It is available to host small gatherings—such as meetings—for a nominal fee, with board members rotating responsibilities to supervise these events. Educational visits, including school groups and summer camps, can also be arranged. Knowledgeable docents and board members are available to guide visitors and share insights into the museum’s exhibits and history.
